While viewing The Tree of Life a few weeks back I saw a trailer for a film that intrigued me. The film is called Another Earth and it’s about a girl who is a part of an accident that kills a man’s family. She goes to apologize to the man for what she has done but she isn’t able to build up the courage, so she starts a friendly relationship with him. He doesn’t know who she really is and what she has really done. While this relationship is building and the girl is struggling with keeping this secret, another Earth is found. This Earth can be seen from our own planet and almost instantly questions start to arise. First contact is made and a reporter finds out that the person reporting from this other world is her. I know that sounds confusing, but it’s really not. This film deals with the idea that there could be another you out there.
An essay to win a free trip to Earth 2 is made and the girl wins. So now she has the chance to go to Earth 2 and see if this other version of her has made the same mistakes she has made on this planet. While she is preparing for this journey the man whose life she ruined is begging her to stay because she is all he has left.
The reason why I wanted to share this trailer with you is because it looks like bold and innovative independent film making at its finest. The mood in the trailer is so intense, full of a wide range of emotions. I really felt engaged while viewing this trailer. I just couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. The actual trailer has been online for quite some time now, but it really is best when viewed on a big screen.
Another Earth is directed by Mike Cahill and it stars Brit Marling, William Mapother and Jordan Baker. It will be getting a limited release on July 20th, 2011. Check out the trailer below.
