Ever since Jay-Z‘s video for ‘Hard Knock Life’ used samples from Annie, it seems that he’s been talking about remaking the movie himself. Now, he and Will Smith are finally moving forward with the project, which has been in development for quite a while. Originally, Smith’s daughter Willow Smith was going to star in the film, but now, she is too old to play the role, so they are looking for a new star at the moment.
The shoot was supposed to begin this spring, but it is now being pushed back to fall, since they have decided to go with a new director. That director will be Will Gluck, who has helmed two features for Sony already in Easy A and Friends With Benefits. It will be a modern day update of the story, and will feature new songs from Jay-Z to go along with the classics from previous stage and screen versions, as well as the comic strips. The film is expected to release sometime in 2014, as long as it starts shooting in fall as planned and nothing else changes.
