The internet has been going nuts over the past week about the footage (first leaked and then official) revealed for Zack Snyder‘s upcoming mega-movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And rightfully so, because it is WB and DC’s answer to Marvel’s The Avengers and it will definitely be one of the biggest box office successes of 2016. But should people be this worried already? No, and I’ll tell you why.
1. Zack Snyder
Director Zack Snyder is no amateur when it comes to bringing popular and sacred comic book material to the big screen. He did it before when he brought 300 and Watchmen to the big screen with mostly smashing success.
Sure, some people will debate Watchmen‘s quality when compared to the epic graphic novel that it was adapted from, but no one can really argue Snyder’s visual style and storytelling techniques when it comes to how he approached and executed both 300 and Watchmen.
I still consider Watchmen to be the very best comic book movie ever, but many will disagree and argue with me for hours on that subject and I’d rather not get into that here, unless you want to drop me a comment down below.[divider top=”no”]
2. Ben Affleck as Batman
Ben Affleck may get endless amounts of shit for starring in Daredevil, but the dude is no slouch when it comes to acting. He’s definitely stepped up his game over the past decade, directing and starring in the likes of The Town and Argo, while delivering a bright and effective performance in last year’s Gone Girl.
Affleck has without a doubt improved dramatically over the years and I think the idea of him playing an old and grizzled version of the Caped Crusader is exactly what his career needs and what we as an audience need to help set this version of Batman apart from Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan‘s take in The Dark Knight trilogy.
This Batman looks and feels like a very different take on the character and I welcome that with open arms.[divider top=”no”]
3. More Man of Steel
I enjoyed Man of Steel, despite its rather large Superman-associated problems. Zack Snyder delivered on a visual level, while Henry Cavill more than proved that he could play the legendary character with a fine balance of peace and aggression.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice promises us more Superman and is essentially going to be Man of Steel 2, mixed with Batman and some Justice League introduction material.
I hope that this allows for Snyder and writer David S. Goyer plenty of time to fix some of those big issues left in Man of Steel and hopefully improve upon the character as a whole in this next installment, without having things feeling a little too rushed/forced and pushed into the whole Justice League initiative.[divider top=”no”]
4. It’s Batman versus Superman
You can’t tell me that you haven’t been waiting for this to happen on the big screen ever since you read the comics or watched the cartoons. Batman and Superman have always been two of the most popular comic book characters of all-time and watching them collide (and eventually form a team) is going to be a blockbuster event that you will not want to miss.
Getting excited on that note alone shouldn’t be too hard for anyone claiming to be a die-hard fan of either respective camps.[divider top=”no”]
5. The Dawn of Justice
I know this may seem like an obvious one, but I think lots of people are forgetting that this is going to be the dawn of the live-action Justice League. I know many are worried about how much Snyder is going to have to cram into the film, including characters, stories and a past established between both the Batman and Superman universes, but this is also going to hopefully make way for an entire new set of films, which will allow lots of characters and events to be explored on the big screen for the first time.
This also gives us a drastic change of tone and style when it comes to superheroes on the big screen. Marvel definitely has the lighter tone and family-friendly audience locked in with The Avengers and those characters, while DC now has the opportunity to explore the darker characters of DC and deliver us a much different look and feel for a mega superhero franchise.[divider top=”no”]
I know many are worried for the future of the DC movie universe after seeing the latest Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, but I’m here to remind you of all the good that could come of it.
Don’t let one teaser trailer throw off all of your hopes and dreams and instead remember why you got excited for this film in the first place.
Feel free to chat with me below in the comments with what you’re most looking forward to or perhaps what is bothering you from the latest trailer release.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theaters on March 25th, 2016.
