This Friday (or should I say Thursday night at 10pm) Paramount’s R-rated action/comedy Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters hits theaters in 3D (IMAX, Real D and Digital). The film stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the famous brother/sister combo of witch killers. The film, directed by Dead Snow‘s Tommy Wirkola, looks like it could be just the right amount of fun and silly, especially with the always promising R-rating.
Another film that Paramount is pushing hard this year (because it got yanked from release last year) is the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis. Paramount is pushing the 3D release so hard that they’ve decided to debut 4 exclusive minutes in front of select showings of Hansel & Gretel.
So that means you’ll be one of the first to check out the highly-talked about 3D conversion for G.I. Joe 2 that caused it to get put on the shelf for almost an entire year. Early word has been strong, saying that the 3D scenes that have been revealed so far really do look better in the extra dimension.
I’m remaining skeptical for both films, because while Hansel & Gretel looks like fun, my gut is telling me that it’ll be too silly and light for my tastes. And with G.I. Joe I’m constantly reminded of the fact that they delayed the film for a 3D conversion that might be good, but still probably won’t be worth the wait, especially after seeing so many damn TV spots and trailers last year. There’s also still talk about them possibly reinserting more Channing Tatum due to his recent rise to fame among Hollywood movie-goers.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters opens tomorrow at 10pm in theaters everywhere, while G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens in 3D on March 29th, 2013.
