Sony Pictures announced at CinemaCon this week that a sequel to 21 Jump Street is finally in the works and is slated for a 2014 release. Before the first film arrived in theaters, Jonah Hill announced himself that a sequel was already planned. After the comedy proved to be a box office hit, the sequel appeared to be put on fast track for a release sometime this year. Last July, producer Doug Belgrad even announced that the sequel would shoot last fall but we all very well know that didn’t happen.
The news is a bit vague and for all we know the sequel could end up being “in the works” for quite sometime. However, Sony would be idiotic if they don’t make a sequel in the near future due to the fact that the first was such a financial and critical hit. It’s safe to assume that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will reprise their roles in the film but nothing official has been announced as of yet. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are not signed on to direct as of this moment and it’s unclear whether they will. Currently, they are working on their animated feature The Lego Movie.
I honestly thought 21 Jump Street was an extremely funny and entertaining reboot. I think a sequel is absolutely necessary and has a lot of potential to be just as funny, if not funnier than the first. Judging from the ending of the first film, there’s a good chance that the inevitable sequel will focus on the two undercover cops in college.
