Yes, despite the rumors a while back that Whitney Houston had passed away, she has actually died at the age of 48.  She rose to fame in the middle 80′s with her self-titled debut album Whitney Houston, which garnered high praise for her bold song choices and the strength of her voice.  Her success continued into the late 1980′s, when she met her longtime husband Bobby Brown of the group New Edition.  Three years later, they were married, and Whitney starred in the movie The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner, singing the song “I Will Always Love You” for the soundtrack and selling millions of copies of records for Houston.

Around this time, Bobby Brown began having trouble with the law, and was often found participating in odd behavior while high on his favorite drug, crack.  Meanwhile, Houston continued to sell records, and in the middle 1990′s she starred in the films The Preacher’s Wife with Denzel Washington and Waiting to Exhale with Angela Bassett.

After this streak of prosperity, with her albums still selling well, Houston’s behavior became often as erratic as her husband’s, missing shows, getting fired, and showing up hours late to interviews got fans worrying that she was smoking crack with her husband Bobby.  Houston went on TV to denounce crack, in what is now a famous internet meme when she quoted the “crack is whack” campaign from the middle 1980′s.

After admitting to different substance abuse problems, a horrifying reality TV show with her husband, and a few more run-ins with the law, Houston came back with an album in 2009 that put her back on the charts.  She appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show denouncing her past behavior and claiming she was on the straight and narrow.  Months later, she was back to her erratic behavior, missing shows, and being generally unreliable.

Legal squabbles over her divorce with Bobby, and problems with her management company derailed a lot of Houston’s plans, like her plan to remake the 1976 film Sparkle with Jordin Sparks and Mike Epps, after a previous attempt ended with the death of proposed star Aaliyah.

Now reports are coming out that Houston’s body was attended to at 3:55 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Hotel by paramedics, who were unable to revive her.  The cause of death is not immediately known, and it will probably be a while before anyone knows for sure, but reports are coming out that she was seen acting erratically once again in the past few days, with some sources hinting at more possible drug use.  She was 48 years old.
