Universal Confirms Their Monsters Cinematic Universe, Which Is Now The ‘Dark Universe’

In our last episode of The Extra Rotation podcast, we discussed Universal Studios’ newly-minted cinematic universe, which was going to get kicked off with Tom Cruise in The Mummy. From there, they have their eyes set on Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and eventually Wolfman and Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Universal has gone on record today to share with us a bit more information about this proposed universe.

For starters, it’s being called the Dark Universe and the next installment will be Bill Condon‘s Bride of Frankenstein, featuring Javier Bardem as Frankenstein. Also, Johnny Depp will play the Invisible Man in what is probably going to be his most confusing role.

Russell Crowe‘s Dr. Jekyll will be the “mastermind” of all of this, initially appearing in The Mummy.

I’m just hoping that this series can return to the horror roots of the original and inject a little creativity and flavor into this new universe. The Mummy looks like another generic Tom Cruise flick and nothing like what a Mummy movie should look like. But maybe there are surprises in store for us and maybe Universal knows what they’re doing.

Probably not.
