This May, director Richard Linklater’s much-anticipated follow-up Before Midnight is finally arriving in theaters. It’s been nearly nine years since the release of 2004’s Before Sunset, Linklater’s follow-up to 1995’s Before Sunrise. The contemporary romance films are beloved by many (myself included) and a follow-up was much desired. Much to our surprise, Before Midnight was shot secretly in Greece last year. The film premiered to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival back in January. Although the film doesn’t arrive in theaters yet for a couple months, the first official trailer has arrived courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics.
In the same fashion as the two previous films, Before Midnight picks up nine years after we were left wondering if Jesse (Ethan Hawke) missed his flight or not. As the trailer reveals, he indeed missed his flight. Jesse and Celine (Julie Delpy) are now a middle-aged couple and parents of twin girls who go on a trip to Vienna. Judging from the trailer, the film looks like it contains elements that I appreciate from the first two films such as humor, excellent dialogue, and beautiful scenery.
Before Midnight is on the slate for this year’s Tribeca Film Festival which runs from April 17th-28th. The film then opens nationwide on May 24th, 2013.
