Never in a million years did I think I would see slow poke director Terrence Malick working on two films in a time span that didn’t last over a decade. Malick, who’s only made five films since 1973 has plans to start production of two additional films in 2012. He’s already got an untitled project with Rachel McAdams and Ben Affleck in post-production, and now it looks like he has his sights set on Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling.
Bale and Malick were already sighted at the Austin City Limits festival back in September, shooting an unknown film, but that just isn’t enough for old Terry. He wants to do two more films with Bale (or one more depending on the rumors).
The best thing about these projects is that they officially have titles and stars attached, which means he might actually be serious when he says he wants to go into production by 2012.
Here’s the scoop on Lawless and Knight of Cups, thanks to Bad Ass Digest:
FilmNation Entertainment is continuing their relationship with acclaimed director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) and handling international sales and distribution on his next two films. LAWLESS will star Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Ides of March) and boasts a supporting cast that includes Academy Award Winners Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Flowers of War), Cate Blanchett (The Hobbit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) plus Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) and Haley Bennett (Marley & Me, The Haunting of Molly Hartley).
The second film, KNIGHT OF CUPS, will star Christian Bale with a supporting cast including Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas (Immortals, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). Both films are currently in pre-production and will shoot back-to-back in 2012. Sarah Green (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World, Take Shelter, Mud) and Nicolas Gonda (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World) will serve as the producers on both films with FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales during this week’s AFM.
So that makes three films for sure that Malick is working on. The word on the street is that one of the films (either Lawless or Knight of Cups) is actually the same film that he’s been spotted filming with Bale, but that has yet to be confirmed.
There’s also Voyage of Time floating around, which is supposed to examine the birth and death of the universe.
I’m curious to see how many of these projects actually go through and on time. Announcing titles and cast is one thing, but staying on schedule and releasing the films accordingly is another. I’d love to see a new flick from Malick every year or even every other year, but only if he’s comfortable doing them that quickly. It might take one or two films into his new batch to tell if the quality has been affected or not by the time crunch, but I think it’s worth the risk.
Worse comes to worse he gets tired of the tight schedule and goes back to his one film every five to ten years.
