Oscar-nominated director Alejandro González Iñárritu is mainly known for his dramatic and emotionally heavy films such as Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, and Biutiful. Although the director has been attached to projects that seem to be more in his dramatic framework, his next feature is going to aim to make you laugh rather than cry. Iñárritu is taking a break from drama and is set to direct a dark comedy titled Birdman. With production beginning next month, the director has assembled quite the unexpected cast. The film is slated to star Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Zach Galifianakis.
According to Heat Vision, the film centers on an actor who once portrayed an iconic superhero. The actor faces problems with his ego and family as he prepares to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory. Michael Keaton is starring in the film as the egotistical former star while Emma Stone is set to portray his recently rehabbed daughter and assistant. Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts is portraying an actress in the Broadway play and The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis is set to portray the producer of the production.
I’m happy to see that Michael Keaton is getting a bit more work. Besides landing the lead role in this film, he is the villain in next year’s Robocop reboot. This role seems to be a perfect fit for Keaton (for obvious reasons). It’ll be interesting to see this cast work together. Birdman is set to begin production this April. Fox Searchlight has already picked up the rights for the film. If ready in time, the film has a good chance to hit the festival circuit later this year. Check back for updates as more cast members are announced.
