Deadline has reported that Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon has officially joined the cast of Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film Inherent Vice. The actress will be reuniting with her Walk The Line co-star Joaquin Phoenix in the adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel.

There hasn’t been confirmation as of yet as to which role she is going to be portraying. Rumor has it that she is replacing Charlize Theron in the role of Shasta Fay Hepworth, the ex-girlfriend of Doc Sportello (Phoenix) who enlists his detective skills to help foil a plot to kidnap her millionaire boyfriend.

It would make sense that Witherspoon would be replacing Theron considering filming is only two weeks away and Theron may have scheduling conflicts due toto her commitments to Seth MacFarlane’s western comedy A Million Ways To Die In The West.

Reese Witherspoon has been having a comeback of sorts after being out of the game for sometime starring in duds such as How Do You Know and This Means War. She has recently appeared in the Jeff Nichols’ acclaimed thriller Mud and has a role in Atom Egoyan’s West Memphis Three pic The Devil’s Knot. Signing to star in a Paul Thomas Anderson film is certainly not a bad career move.

Warner Bros. will be distributing Inherent Vice. So far, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin J. Anderson, Martin Short, and Jena Malone. As expected, Paul Thomas Anderson is rounding up quite a cast.

Considering filming will be underway in just a couple weeks, we may see Inherent Vice in theaters late next year. What do you think of the casting choice?
