In what seems like a really bold strategy, Disney will be releasing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on Blu-ray first and then DVD almost a month later.
That’s right, according to Blu-ray.com the Blu-ray release date is October 18th and the DVD release date is November 15th. This is pretty big news considering the Pirates series is a hot seller. On Stranger Tides has already raked in over a billion dollars world wide and I’m sure its looking at making some more money on home video.
With the release of the Blu-ray first, fans will have the option of skipping the DVD altogether. The Blu-ray will be released in two separate packages, first a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack or a 5 disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray 2D/DVD/Digtal Copy combo pack. I’m assuming the basic combo pack will be around 20 dollars, which means DVD owners would be better off buying that instead of waiting a month to get the DVD only release for 3 dollars cheaper.
I’m very curious to see how this works for Blu-ray and if it makes any difference at all. Blu-ray is slowly taking over the home video market and it’s only a matter of time before it defeats DVD.
I just wish more studios would do this and with more movies. Last year Lionsgate did something similar with Buried. They released Buried as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack for a cheap price and eliminated the DVD release. I think some rental chains like Blockbuster got DVD copies, which were later sold as used copies.
I hated Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I thought it was absolute trash and one of the worst movies of the year. Check out my review by clicking here. That being said, I might buy the Blu-ray to support the cause of earlier releases! I must put emphasis on the might though.
