Nominations For The 85th Academy Awards

Earlier this morning, this year’s Oscar host Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone took the stage in Hollywood to announce the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards. There are a few pleasant and unpleasant surprises. The film that has the highest number of nominations is unsurprisingly Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln with a total of twelve nominations. Ang Lee’s 3D adventure Life of Pi earned a whopping total of eleven nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Argo earned a total of seven nominations and Zero Dark Thirty earned a total of five. David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook earned a total of eight nominations and Django Unchained ended up with a total of five nominations.

Two smaller films Amour and Beasts of the Southern Wild had a particularly good morning. Michael Haneke’s Austrian drama received nomination for Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Beasts of the Southern Wild received nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Director. Quvenzhane Wallis made Oscar history this morning by becoming the youngest nominee for Best Actress at the age of nine. The most surprise nomination for Beasts of the Southern Wild is Benh Zeitlin for Best Director.

Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino, and Tom Hooper all seemed like sure bets to get nominated for Best Director but were snubbed. It’s rare that the list of DGA nominees is so different from the Academy’s list. The latest Bond venture Skyfall was predicted to be the only blockbuster to earn a Best Picture nomination but was left out. Other noticeable snubs include Marion Cotillard for Rust and Bone, John Hawkes for The Sessions, Leonardo DiCaprio for Django Unchained, and screenplay nominations for Looper and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Below is the complete list of the nominees:
