Yesterday’s matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears was the most I’d ever looked forward to a football game since Blair Walsh ate shit in the playoffs a few years ago. And it certainly wasn’t because my Vikes were playing, oh no. It was because I knew damn well (and have for a few weeks now) that we were all going to be blessed with the greatest halftime ever during Monday Night Football on October 9th with a new trailer for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. And lo and behold the blessing that has been bestowed upon us.
Firstly, this is not at all a spoiler-free trailer. Far from it, actually. However, there are some clear instances where trailer-editing magic rears its head, and I believe one of the meatier bits was a victim of this. So, perhaps, we should trust none of what we see in this trailer.
What I do trust is the tone that is presented in this trailer. Everything feels very uncertain and uneasy. Luke Skywalker’s feelings towards Rey’s strength springs to mind right away. And regarding Luke, the performance of Mark Hamill in this film has been the biggest question mark for me personally. While I can’t judge an entire film’s worth of a performance from a two and a half minute trailer, I can say that my mind feels more at ease in its belief that Hamill is going to crush it as old, bitter, and potentially Grey Jedi Luke.
What are your thoughts on the new trailer? As for me, the hype train has already made the jump to hyperspace. The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th, 2017.
