Tom Hanks has two big films coming out later this year that might lead him back into the Oscar race. Before we watch him as Walt Disney in the biopic Saving Mr. Banks, we’ll see him fight for his life against Somali pirates in Paul Greengrass’ upcoming thriller Captain Phillips. The new trailer for the film, which Sony Pictures released today, promises that this will be an intense recount of a heroic event.
The film tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. Phillips spent three days as a hostage of the Somali pirates before being rescued by Navy SEALs.
Captain Phillips will be shown at the New York Film Festival this fall before opening in theaters nationwide on October 11th. The film is directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93) and is written by Billy Ray (Breach and State of Play) based on Richard Phillip’s memoir A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days At Sea.
