While Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium didn’t dazzle critics as much as District 9 did back in 2009, the sci-fi director has rolled up his sleeves and started pre-production on his next effort titled Chappie. We already know that Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) will star as the lead, Sharlto Copley will voice a robot, and the South African rap duo Die Antwoord will have key roles. Now, according to Screen Daily, Oscar-nominated actor Hugh Jackman has joined the cast in an unspecified role.
The film is based on Blomkamp’s 2003 sci-fi short film Tetra Vaal and centers on a robot imbued with artificial intelligence that is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.
Hugh Jackman reportedly revealed he has joined the cast himself during a press conference at the Zurich Film Festival where he was in attendance to receive the Golden Icon Award. After a member of the press asked him what he has planned next, Jackman responded, “I am doing a role in Neill‘s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”
Shooting is expected to begin later this year and will continue to shoot through early next year. Sony Pictures will be releasing Chappie into theaters on March 27th, 2015. Make sure to check back for more updates as they come our way.
