Animated sequels are tricky business. Most of them are simple cash grabs for the studios, because animation always sells and kids are almost always willing to eat up more and more of the same. But occasionally a studio gets it right (see the Toy Story franchise).

How to Train Your Dragon was a surprise and a half for me. I was not expecting it to be so much fun, full of quality animation and a story with characters that I enjoyed and would gladly follow on another adventure, if the right adventure came along.

Director Dean DeBlois returns with How to Train Your Dragon 2, which is looking like one of those rare sequels that advances on everything that the first one laid down. The action looks bigger and better, yet the moments between Hiccup and Toothless are still their in full color.

This new full-length trailer reveals a bit more about the film and how it kicks off not too far into the future after the last film. There’s also a bit of a plot twist revealed that might have been better off saved for the actual film.

I’m really liking what I’m seeing so far and cannot wait for the film’s June release date.

Check out the trailer below:

The thrilling second chapter of the epic How To train Your Dragon trilogy brings back the world Hiccup (Baruchel) and Toothless five years later. While Astrid (ferrera), Snoutlout (Hill) and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Hiccup and Toothless will lead hundreds of hero dragons in defense of Dragon Mountain, battling against Drago Bloodfist’s huge army of Dragon Hunters and their ruthless war machines.
