Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno and Young Adult) has joined the list of screenwriters-turned-directors. She has stepped behind the camera for her directorial debut titled Paradise starring Julianne Hough, Octavia Spencer, Russell Brand, Nick Offerman, and Holly Hunter. The first batch of images from the film has arrived (courtesy of USA Today). Check them out below.
The film, formerly titled Lamb of God, centers on a young and beautiful Christian woman named Lamb (Hough) who suffers severe burns from a devastating plane crash that leads to a spiritual crisis and a trip to Las Vegas to enjoy the sinful side of life. Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer portrays a craps dealer and Russell Brand portrays a bartender, both of whom Lamb befriends in Vegas. Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) and Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter (The Piano) portray Lamb’s overbearing conservative parents.
In the USA Today article, Diablo Cody describes the film as an opportunity to combine her trademark writing style and a message of hope.
“If you have ever been through something incredibly difficult such as this kind of injury, you know it’s hard to stay positive and not surrender to cynicism completely,” Cody said. “I wanted to make a non-cynical movie that would inspire positivity.”
The film, which Diablo Cody also wrote, seems to be more light and positive than her bleak screenplay for the misfire otherwise known as Young Adult. Hopefully this’ll contain Diablo Cody’s refreshing witticism. Paradise arrives in theaters on October 18th.
