We’re inching closer and closer to the release of two very different films, Dredd 3D and Lawless. Both share nothing in common, except perhaps for some bloody violence and now these two final theatrical posters.
I’m a sucker for posters and general marketing stuff, because I love what creative minds behind films like this can come up with when given concepts, photos and actors and their own imagination. Some posters are too busy or too bland while some take pride in their simplistic approach or overabundance of color and activity.
Both posters have a little bit of everything mentioned above, with one going for some awards bait and the other promising a bloody good time.
Lawless is the first one up to bat, with a poster that isn’t nearly as good as some of the other marketing efforts, but still a nice entry in the promotional road of posters and trailers. It leans a bit more towards the awards crowd, with the characters in epic poses and the names of everyone involved listed in a spot that means you need to take notice.
John Hillcoat‘s prohibition-era drama stars Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce and it comes out later this month on August 29th, 2012. I for one cannot wait to get a look at it, because I’m a huge fan of Hillcoat’s and I generally like all of the stars involved, aside from LaBeouf, who in his credit looks to be providing a performance actually worthy of his potential.
Switching genres and pace is Pete Travis‘ Dredd 3D, which stars Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby. Dredd is a reboot of the Sylvester Stallone film from the 90s and apparently a much more faithful adaptation of the source material. This poster is normal Lionsgate material, with focus on the violence and mayhem. I couldn’t help but to be reminded of one of the posters for Punisher: War Zone when looking at this final poster, which isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, Dredd 3D reminds me a lot of Punisher, with its dark and bloody roots stemming up into a violent spectacle that promises gore and a good time. I hope it delivers.
Dredd 3D will be released on September 21st, 2012.
