Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action reboot of Alice in Wonderland made over $1 billion in the global box office, so it was only inevitable that Disney would plan a sequel but plans were kept mostly quiet. Over the summer, it was reported that director James Bobin (The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted) would replace Tim Burton to direct the sequel and Johnny Depp was in negotiations to reprise his role as the Mad Hatter but nothing has been announced since until now.
Disney has recently announced that both Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp are both set to reprise their roles in Alice in Wonderland 2, which will be released into theaters on May 27th, 2016. I guess it’s understandable why Disney is planning far in advance for the sequel considering it’ll take a lot of time and preparation to produce but six years after the first is quite a long time.
Disney is undoubtedly going to have a big year in 2016. The studio has already scheduled two untitled Marvel Studios projects (both are speculated to be Thor 3 and Doctor Strange), Pixar’s Finding Dory, two Disney Animation releases, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and an unspecified Star Wars spin-off.
