Director Talk For Captain America Sequel

Those of you thinking that Marvel is going to be taking a comic-book break after the soon to be mega-hit known as The Avengers, should probably know that they plan on moving ahead with sequels to their established characters. Iron Man 3 already had a returning cast and director, while Thor 2 has been having some troubles securing a director. The latest word discusses a sequel to Joe Johnston‘s Captain America: The First Avenger.

Vulture is reporting the top candidates for the choice and not a single name really has me jumping for joy. I do appreciate the variety that Marvel has decided to pick from, mostly due to the likelihood that the story will take place in modern day, so the need for a fresh director is crucial as Johnston is primarily a period piece type of guy.

The first director that’s popped up on the list is George Nolfi, who previously directed The Adjustment Bureau. Nolfi is a bit of a wild card, which I like. He’s mostly been focused on writing, having penned scripts for The Bourne Ultimatum, Ocean’s Twelve and The Sentinel. The Adjustment Bureau was his first film as a director and for the most part he successfully delivered a sci-fi/romance that balanced the two genres well and worked mostly because of its two star performers. The film has its flaws, but it worked none the less.

Another interesting choice is F. Gary Gray, who directed Law Abiding Citizen and The Italian Job. Gray is another more than capable director that I think could give Captain America a fresh set of eyes.

The weirdest names on the list are that of Anthony and Joseph Russo. The two are best known for the comedic direction on films such as You, Me and Dupree as well as episodes of Arrested Development and Community. The two could be exactly what Marvel needs to take Captain America in an entirely new direction, but at the same time having only seen them direct comedies makes me wonder if they have what it takes to direct such a prestigious and important character in the Marvel universe?

If you had to pick one director (or the pairing of the Russo’s) to take on the Captain America sequel, who would it be?

Captain America 2 is scheduled to be released sometime in the summer of 2014
